A Running Toilet Can Waste About 200 Gallons a Day

According to the EPA, a leaking toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water every day. That's thousands of gallons a month going straight down the drain and onto your water bill, often without anyone noticing.

  • Check yours: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 to 15 minutes without flushing.
  • If color shows up in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank, usually past a worn flapper.

Got a high water use notice from the city? Cities in our area leave notes on the door when a home is using far more water than usual, and sometimes they shut the water off. In our experience, about 7 out of 10 times the cause is one or more running toilets.

Found a leak, or got a notice? Call us at (254) 768-9043. It's usually a quick fix.

Toilet Problems We Fix

If your toilet is doing something it shouldn't, we can take care of it.

Running Toilet

Water that keeps running after a flush is usually a worn flapper or a fill valve that won't shut off. It's wasting water every minute it runs.

Ghost Flushing

Your toilet refills on its own when no one's used it. That means water is slowly leaking from the tank into the bowl until the tank refills.

Wobbly Toilet

A toilet that rocks can break the wax ring seal underneath and let water leak into your floor. We find the cause and reset it so it's solid.

Cracked Tank or Bowl

Cracked porcelain can leak or fail without warning. In most cases, the safe fix is a new tank or a new toilet.

Something Stuck in the Toilet

Toys, phones, toothbrushes, and other things that weren't meant to be flushed. We can often get them out, sometimes by pulling the toilet.

Leaking at the Base

Water around the base of the toilet usually means a failed wax ring. Left alone, it can damage the floor underneath.

Toilet clogging over and over, or more than one drain backing up? That can be a problem further down the line. See our drain cleaning page.

Standard, ADA Height, or Tall?

Toilet height makes a big difference in how easy it is to sit down and stand up. We install all three.

Standard Height

  • The traditional toilet height, around 15 inches
  • Often a good fit for kids and shorter adults

ADA (Comfort) Height

  • The seat sits 17 to 19 inches from the floor
  • The height range in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design
  • Easier on knees and backs, and a popular choice for most adults

Extra-Tall Toilets

  • Taller than ADA height, often around 20 to 21 inches
  • A good fit for taller people
  • Helps anyone who has a hard time getting up from a lower seat

How a Toilet Replacement Works

Simple, and you know the price before we start.

  1. Pick the Right Toilet

Tell us what you're looking for. We'll help you choose the right height and style for the people using it.

  2. Written Estimate

You get a written estimate before any work begins.

  3. Remove and Inspect

We pull the old toilet and check the flange and floor underneath, so the new one sits on a solid base.

  4. Install and Test

We set the new toilet level and secure, connect the water, and test it for leaks. Then we haul away the old toilet and dispose of it properly, so you're not left with it.

Landlords and Property Managers

Running toilets are one of the most common, and most expensive, problems in rental properties. Tenants often don't report them, and the water bill keeps climbing until the city leaves a high water use notice or shuts the water off. When we get one of those calls, a running toilet is the cause about 7 out of 10 times. We take work orders by phone or email, schedule with your tenants, and send photos with every invoice. See our property management plumbing page.

Toilet Questions

How much water does a running toilet waste?

According to the EPA, a leaking toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water a day. That adds up to thousands of gallons a month, which is why a running toilet is worth fixing right away.

The city left a notice about high water use. What should I do?

Check your toilets first. In our experience, about 7 out of 10 high water use notices are caused by one or more running toilets. Listen for water running, or do the food coloring test in each tank. If you can't find it, or the city has shut your water off, give us a call and we'll track down the leak.

Why does my toilet flush or refill by itself?

That's called ghost flushing. Water is slowly leaking from the tank into the bowl, usually past a worn flapper, until the water level drops enough for the tank to refill. It's a quick repair, and it stops the wasted water.

Is a wobbly toilet a problem?

Yes. When a toilet rocks, it can break the wax ring seal underneath and let water leak into the floor, where it can cause damage you don't see until later. We'll find out why it's moving and reset it so it's solid.

Can a cracked toilet tank be repaired?

In most cases, no. Patching cracked porcelain isn't a reliable fix, and a crack can fail without warning. The safe fix is a new tank or a new toilet, and we'll tell you which makes more sense.

Something fell in my toilet. What should I do?

Don't flush it again. Flushing or plunging can push the object further into the toilet or drain line. Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet if it's filling up, then give us a call. We can often get the item out, sometimes by pulling the toilet.

What's the difference between ADA height and tall toilets?

An ADA (comfort) height toilet has a seat 17 to 19 inches from the floor, the range in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Extra-tall toilets go higher, often around 20 to 21 inches, which can help taller people and anyone who has trouble getting up from a lower seat. We install standard, ADA, and tall toilets.

Do you haul away the old toilet?

Yes. When we replace a toilet, we haul away the old one and dispose of it properly. You don't have to figure out what to do with it.

Do you handle toilet repairs for rental properties?

Yes. We work with landlords and property managers in Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, and the surrounding area. We take work orders by phone or email, schedule with tenants, and send photos with every invoice.
